How to Buy Good-Quality Amethyst Jewelry Online: 7 Things to Check
When buying amethyst jewelry online, look for a seller who tells you what the stone is, which metal components are used, how large the piece is and what happens if it is unsuitable. Clear photographs help you choose the look. Specific written details help you understand the purchase.
This checklist is for assessing an online listing. For help choosing between necklaces, bracelets and earrings, use our amethyst buying guide. Product examples below are from LUMERUNE, so they are brand examples rather than independent reviews.
1. Get a specific stone description
“Purple crystal” leaves several questions unanswered. Look for the mineral name and, where relevant, a statement about natural or laboratory-grown origin and known treatments. A general disclaimer about natural variation does not document the treatment history of every stone in a mixed design.
If natural origin is essential to you, ask for the information supporting that claim before ordering. Our guide to real, synthetic and imitation amethyst explains why a color photograph cannot settle it.
2. Use photos to judge appearance and scale
Look for a view of the whole piece as well as the stone close-up. Consider whether the color, shape and proportions suit you. Ask for another view if the only image leaves the back, fastening or overall size unclear. Different lighting can change how saturated a purple stone appears.
Clarity and a pleasing cut may affect your preference, but a clean-looking stone is not proof of natural origin. Separate the question “Do I like this?” from “What evidence supports the description?”
3. Read the metal wording literally
S925 or 925 sterling silver identifies a silver alloy, while a gold-plated sterling silver description identifies a layer over that base. A 14K gold-plated piece should not be confused with a piece made from 14K gold alloy throughout. Follow the complete phrase rather than stopping at “14K.”
For example, the Cross Amethyst Pendant is listed with 14K gold-plated 925 sterling silver. The Dewdrop Amethyst Necklace lists sterling silver round beads and an S925 hook clasp alongside amethyst and cubic zirconia. Those are component descriptions, not a claim that the entire necklace is a solid-silver chain.
If a seller uses “vermeil,” ask for the base metal and plating specification rather than treating the word as a general synonym for anything gold-colored. Material terminology is covered in the FTC’s jewelry buying guidance.
4. Ask what “AAA” means to that seller
There is no standardized AAA, AA or A grading scale for amethyst, according to GIA. A seller may use a private scale, but it should explain the criteria. You cannot assume that two shops mean the same thing by the same letters.
A useful reply will describe the stone and the basis for the assessment. Repeating “premium quality” gives you little more to work with.
5. Separate stone measurements from jewelry measurements
A stone dimension and a bracelet length answer different questions. Check that the number has a clear label and unit. If a ring listing says only “11 mm,” ask what was measured; do not assume it is the finger size or the width of the main stone.
Use the size guide to compare overall fit. For earrings, also consider the total drop. For a pendant, check the pendant dimensions, chain inclusion and chain length separately. Close-up photography can make a compact piece look substantial.
6. Read the purchase conditions before you need them
Find the delivery estimate for your country and the return window. Check eligibility conditions and how to request a return. If the purchase is a gift, consider when the recipient will open it. LUMERUNE’s window is 14 days under the return policy; it is not a 30-day policy.
Care instructions should account for the whole piece. A bracelet with quartz, pearl and metal components needs advice suited to that combination. See our care guide before choosing a cleaning method.
7. Look for evidence beyond the seller’s adjectives
Read actual customer reviews when available, paying attention to fit, service and whether the item matched its description. An independent feature can add context, but check whether it is advertising, an affiliate article or an editorial assessment. A directory listing establishes a brand presence; it is not a gemstone certification.
When a product has no reviews, you have less independent feedback to work with. Look closely at its specifications, ask about anything unclear and read the purchase conditions before deciding.
What can different budgets buy?
As checked in September 2026, the US-dollar prices at LUMERUNE include the Violet Mist Amethyst Drop Earrings at $89, the Dewdrop Amethyst Necklace at $168 and the Violet Amethyst Bracelet with Grey Pearl & Clear Quartz at $257. These examples fall below $150 and between $150 and $300; they do not establish a quality ranking.
Prices and availability can change, and local currencies, taxes and shipping may differ. Above $300, keep asking the same questions rather than assuming the extra cost proves stone origin or better construction. Choose the features you can identify and value.
