Citrine vs Topaz: Which November Birthstone Should You Choose?

November has two birthstones: citrine and topaz. They can both look warm and golden, but they are different minerals, and topaz also comes in colors such as blue and pink. If you're choosing a piece of jewelry, color is the first useful difference. How the piece will be worn is the next.

Choose the color you'll reach for

Citrine is a variety of quartz with yellow to orange tones. Topaz spans a wider palette; the individual product page should tell you which color and stone you are buying. Choose citrine if its warm color suits the wearer's usual jewelry. Choose topaz if a different shade, such as blue, feels more like them. Our November birthstone page shows both stones together.

What about everyday wear?

Citrine rates 7 on the Mohs scale and has good toughness. Topaz rates 8, so it resists scratching better, but its cleavage makes it more vulnerable to a sharp blow. A higher Mohs number is not a promise that a stone can take rough wear. If the jewelry will be worn often, consider how exposed the stone is and remove it before activities that could knock it against a hard surface. GIA's November birthstone guide explains the distinction.

Make the decision at the product level

Compare the actual pieces, not only the gem names. Check the setting, metal, measurements, images and any treatment information in each listing. A pendant and a ring will meet different amounts of contact during the day. For a gift, color and fit may settle the choice faster than a hardness rating.
