Citrine is the transparent yellow-to-brownish-orange variety of quartz. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) also includes orange and orangy red within its published color range. Like other quartz, citrine has a Mohs hardness of 7 and a chemical composition of SiO₂.

Natural yellow citrine is relatively rare. GIA reports that most citrine in today’s market is produced by heat-treating amethyst, another variety of quartz. That fact describes the gemstone’s material history; it does not decide how someone should feel about a ring, pendant, or bracelet made from it.

Material history and personal symbolism can sit beside each other as long as both are described honestly. A treated stone can still be beautiful and meaningful, but treatment should not be confused with a naturally developed color.

Citrine has a long jewelry history
